Code Review

This pull request, generated by Snyk, upgrades Express from version 3 to 4 to address a security vulnerability. This is a major version update that introduces significant breaking changes. While the dependency update is necessary, it will likely break the application if merged without corresponding code changes to adapt to the Express 4 API. I've added a critical review comment on package.json detailing the required migration steps and also noting other outdated dependencies that should be addressed.

"dependencies": {
"body-parser": "^1.15.0",
"express": ">=3.11 <4",
"express": ">=4.0.0",

critical

Upgrading Express from version 3.x to 4.x is a major change with significant breaking changes. Merging this PR without updating the application code will likely cause it to crash.

Express 4 Migration

While the version bump in package.json is correct, the application code must be updated to be compatible with Express 4. Based on the project structure, changes are most likely needed in app/config.js (which is not part of this PR).

Here are some of the key changes you'll need to make:

  1. Separate Middleware: All bundled middleware (like bodyParser, cookieParser, session, logger, static, etc.) has been removed from the Express core. You need to install them as separate modules and require them in your code. I see body-parser is already in your dependencies, but you need to ensure you are using it correctly (e.g., var bodyParser = require('body-parser'); app.use(bodyParser.json());) instead of the old app.use(express.bodyParser());.

  2. app.configure() Removed: The app.configure() function is no longer available. You can use if (process.env.NODE_ENV === 'development') { ... } for environment-specific configurations.

  3. app.use(app.router) Removed: The app.router object is gone. Middleware and routes are now processed in the order they are added. You should declare all your app.use() middleware calls before your route definitions (app.get(), app.post(), etc.).

The call require('./app/config')(app, express); in subnode.js strongly suggests the application is using Express 3 patterns that will break.

Please review the official Express 4 migration guide and update your application code accordingly before merging this change.

Other Outdated Dependencies

As a side note, several other dependencies are also significantly outdated and may contain security vulnerabilities or bugs (pug, socket.io, stylus). I recommend creating a separate task to review and update these as well.
