Math directive does not render in preview

Describe the bug

The equations in a math directive do not render, whereas inline and math blocks do.

To Reproduce
Type:

f(x)=1

The result is

Expected behavior
To render as the following does:
$$
f(x)=1
$$

Desktop (please complete the following information):

• OS: macOS Monterey 12.6 (21G115)
• VSCode: 1.75.0 (Universal)
• MyST-Markdown extension: v0.11.0
