I think they may have just been pointing out that no, SharpIDE does not currently support VB.NET.

It is certainly possible, I just haven't had time to investigate and implement it, and I am also trying to be pragmatic about the amount of code and features I have to maintain.

Hi Matt, I also feel that their reaction means Sharp IDE VB.NET is not supported.
Anyway, thanks for the reply ,no worries. I was just curious, since you also know how low in resource consumption Visual Studio is😉

@MattParkerDev the earlier SharpIDE embraces its own extension API like VS does, the easier you can shift that burden to extension authors so that they take care of VB.NET/F#, etc., while you fully focus on C# and the IDE Shell.

I too am interested in other languages like VB.net, F# and PowerShell (all three are FOSS, all three can run on MS Windows (R), Linux, MacOS and FreeBSD). It would be great if they get supported too. Thank you.

Currently , there's nothing we can do about it. Someone would need to build an alternative IDE, and if someone does, I hope they build it using Tauri/Wails or C# rather than Electron. Let @MattParkerDev handle the codebase. He's already done sufficient work for the C# community.

SharpIDE is not built with Electron - it uses Godot for the UI.

I mentioned Electron because most cross-platform desktop applications nowadays are built with it

Hey, sorry, buddy, I deleted that stupid dislike. I don't know how I gave it to you — your question is perfectly normal. What's more, I used VB for a long time, starting with VB6, and it was a good experience.

If any of you would like to work on VB.NET support, you have a few options now,

• TextMate based highlighting. [WIP] VS for Windows language extension compatibility test #99 shows how to do that for T4, so adding VB.NET won't be too difficult.
• Language server based semantic highlighting. For that you need to wait for the next experiment.
• Full integration like C#. As far as I see, SharpIDE right now is tightly coupled with Roslyn and we all know Roslyn supports VB.NET. So, the question is how to simply flip the switch to turn that on. If you happen to use Codex/Claude, let them vibe some prototype out, and you might learn a lot.
