Short update on status.
Network problems are overcome by USB tether to an iPhone with Mobile Hotspot enabled. Out of the box, this Questing on the 6.19 kernel just works. Devices both produce dialogs for connection trust, and then the Gnome Shell network widget changes state.

This is my "light at the end of the tunnel" post. It's suggested that many images can't make full use of available RAM, and I have 64GB on this example. Second, I made a new BTRFS partition in 800GB freespace on the NVMe. I'll report back, after I bust out subvols, rsync a bunch into a chroot, and start tinkering. Thanks for inviting me and the welcome. I will get to the extraction of these details tomorrow, and supply these with the aim of contributing to an eventual device specific DTB, etc. Yeah, I reserved 70GB for the Windows 11 partition. Even with a heavily configured WSL environment, it's a pain to use. I think that the windows terminals being so bad were a driving motivation for the creation of popular IDEs! LOL If I were to build a debbootstrap resembling your January
I assume these are the Ubuntu/Debian packages, and those labeled "qcom" are for the devkit hardware, but it like to validate this. |

Ubuntu Concept is using the name qcom-x1e throughout their repo: https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-concept/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/questing Since my tree mainly is based on the Ubuntu tree, I use the same naming. Also the same default config, plus a few small bits. So the kernel packages I build should be drop-in replacements, yes. The actual hardware supported is... all arm64 that Canonical chooses to support. Meaning also Rockchip, Broadcom, CIX. My repo (this one) also has a rebuild.sh borrowed from pop-os to build the whole packages as defined by Canonical. |

It's nice to be back after travel, and pick this device back up today. 1 - I tried the method you describe for enabling audio with the HP Omnibook X 14, with appropriate adjustments for symlinks. This doesn't provide a usable audio device and the only output is still "dummy". 2 - USB-A port is intermittently available, about 3 out of 4 times it is present after boot. 3 - Trackpad is not detected, non-functional. 4 - Camera not detected. 5 - Keyboard backlight also not detected. This seems trivial, but the HP KB is surprisingly low-contrast. Obviously, we won't be able to have this a supported device for 26.04, but I'm hopeful that 26.10 will "just work" with collaboration on contributions. |

I'm getting to prep some of this information and participate in advancing support for the new HP Omnibook series with x1p. My latest progress has been to install the latest of the 6.19-rc8 Concept Images on the target NVMe without the broken subiquity installer. Instead of a couple hours doing this by hand, I spend several days on writing and debugging bash scripting to run start-to-finish from the booted ISO with debootstrap, resulting in a minimal but stable working installation with:
All sources are pulled from Ubuntu repositories and relevant PPAs, except for Jens' kernel related packages and DTB information, that is fetched (cleverly) from Google Drive and Gtithub. I'll push the working version to my Github, and update with the link and README. I bodged this from a bunch of earlier scripts from my own collection and other sources, mainly from Pine64 and Armbian forums for unsupported board/OS combinations. I laid out the functions in clear sections and outlined the main function procedure. When I got stuck, I'd cheat and have ChatGPT analyze failures, and sent my final script and spec to ChatGPT for documentation by internal commenting. There are a bunch of sanity-checks so you don't make blatant mistakes, but installation still requires understanding of devices and partition implications. Secrets gathered from user are stored as runtime variabless, but never committed to screen or log output. The result is 100% reproduceable installations. What doesn't work OOB on the HP Omnibook 5, with Omnibook X .dtb:

Re ath11k / WCN6855: It's not recognized due to an ID mismatch. But the Realtek driver rtw88_8822bu thinks its his, but apparently not really. Fix will be to acquaintance the ath11k driver with this ID. Could you please add the lspci -tvnn and maybe also lspci -vvv output? This should help seeing whats installed and how to access it. |

Thanks for being patient during this last week, where I wrestled with contingencies from work. Since I have baseline functionality on the Omnibook 5, I'm doing all my Github and forum work, etc. from the machine as dogfood. I moved all my firmware blobs to the eventual ideal I rebuilt the initramfs and updated GRUB. No new messages. I have

I'm confused about your lspci. Your post with lspci -vvv from 28FEB2026 shows:
And mine shows:
They look like the same device to me. sudo lspci -nn
Did you maybe start using a different DTB? I'm currently using the DTB from the commit of the kernel I built. |

If anyone wants to make a jlathe ISO image into a bootable installation on their target system, I published my installer script here. It's network dependent, and makes strong choices for btrfs and LUKS encryption. This SHOULD work on any target system, and could probably work with any of the ISO images with a little tweaking. I own an HP OmniBook 5 Laptop 14-he0xxx Mobo: HP model: 8E33 v: 54.27. It is essentially the 14" variant of the OP. Currently I am running a kernel and a DTB from an earlier Ubuntu preview image, the last version I tried, resolute-desktop-arm64+x1e-20260221_extended_jg_1.iso causes the screen to blank out, even with the same kernel parameters. Yeah, it's a pretty handy one (USB WiFi), however, the USB-A port will work some boots, and not others. I suspect that's why it sometimes wouldn't boot from that port too. I have dangled that off of a USB-C dock when the A doesn't work and I don't want to reboot yet. @JeremiahCornelius you mention hwinfo (from Windows?), but Win11 is already removed from my laptop, and I REALLY don't want to go and manually make install media again thanks to the Win10 era ISO bug that causes a dd'd ISO to not detect storage devices, and thus not be able to reinstall. Also the pain of having to connect a useable USB ethernet, and wait for Windows Update to figure out that it needs to get the driver package for the laptop, because slipstreaming isn't a thing for MS anymore. So unless absolutely required, I really do not want to cripple my computer by installing Windows on it again (fresh for the second time). Can you think of other things you'd want me to run/look at that may help you? |

@jglathe could you recommend a DTS editor that can preferably do block collapsing and maybe meld-like functionality? I was fine doing PPC Book-E DTS files that were like 8kiB in vim, but these DTS files are kinda obscenely large in comparison, and I'd love to have a more purpose-built program. |

Zed is a likely alternative to Sublime-text. It has a fanclub, for sure, even among people who aren't rust enthusiasts. I haven't used the git integration, but good handling of pulls and merges are table stakes these days. I go for vi from habit - I keep leaving random colons in files I edit with nano! I'm really happy in LazyVIM. It has everything needed to make vi a modern, integrated IDE. Coupled with LazyGIT as a plugin, it will give Sublime-Merge a good run, tho' again my own experience is limited. |

I use vim a lot, and when I've got a bunch of files in a project, I use VSCodium (FOSS VSCode). I haven't found either to be great with DTS files, and it looks like there are unmaintained and broken plugins for VSC at this point. There's a new Zed fork called "Gram" that I might give a try. I was building it this morning. |

UPDATE - 28/03/26 - Native DTS/DTB Candidate for HP Omnibook 5 16 I have a candidate dts for this device, derivative of the This boots cleanly, without dmesg firmware errors, etc. Device support - or lack - is the same as the HP Omnibook X 14. This leads me to believe additional work is needed with drivers. Oh wow that is without the purwa.dtsi include. Lots of SoC internals. IMO it would be better to have the SoC definitions from the purwa.dtsi file and just define specifics for the model. Like, pci buses, i2c buses and attached peripherals, type-c connectors, type-a connectors, hdmi bridge, voltage regulators, that sort of thing. Even if this one works perfectly, it wouldn't get upstreamed IMO. |

Checking with glxinfo -B and eglinfo -B. It's pretty quick to see when I log into KDE and the dimming effect for the screen stutters a bit and has steps instead of being smooth. |

Interesting. I have a device 0 and device 1 according to eglinfo -b. I assume 0 is primary renderer and 1 is a fallback? I'm no expert here. 0 looks like native GPU acceleration. I'm on the new 7.0.0-22-qcom-x1e kernel from Ubuntu ports repositories. |

Ok, so, I modified my DTB from the kernel build with your changes (a LOT of phandle changes), and I have trackpad and adreno support again. I think the main problem for me was that your firmware directory is different now, and I hadn't made/synlinked/copied that, so, the firmware wasn't being loaded for the GPU. |

I'm kicking off a discussion here, branching from the "Concept Snapdragon" forum on Ubuntu Discourse. Jens suggested I continue the side-topic on HP Omnibook 5 here.
I got a hold of an HP Omnibook 5 16” OLED with 1TB storage and 64 GB RAM. These are cheap and plentiful, well-made x1p-42-100 machines. I got this one for 800 USD, taxed and shipped.
It would be a real service to get these machines functional under a user-friendly Linux.
Confession: I'm an aarch64 junkie. Stop me before I buy another board for Armbian.
Since I have built system images with debbootstrap, a DTB folder and kernel-sources many, many times - and used these techniques to put Debian on Apple Silicon from the Asahi base, I assumed getting a baseline Linux on this machine would be easier. Haha!
